The pediatric otolaryngology training program is one year in duration and is under the auspices of the ACGME program requirements. The fellowship program is associated with the ACGME-accredited otolaryngology residency training program at Northwestern University.

Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago is an international referral center for tertiary pediatric medicine.  The pediatric otolaryngology department at  Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago is the busiest in the region.  The otolaryngology department sees an average of 1200 outpatients per month and performs an average of 500 surgical procedures per month.  Fellows are involved in the care of high-risk neonates and children with a variety of rare and complicated congenital and acquired conditions that have otolaryngologic manifestations.  Fellows work closely with our nationally recognized expert pediatric otolaryngology subspecialty faculty to refine their skills in pediatric otolaryngology and to participate in advanced surgeries beyond the expertise of residents in training.  The volume of complex fellow “index” cases as defined by the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology is exceeded year after year. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago offers the fellows exposure to a cutting-edge pediatric airway practice where they will be involved in the management of and surgical reconstruction of the compromised pediatric airway. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago is a national referral center for pediatric head and neck masses with national recognition for the treatment of congenital pediatric neck masses. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago has also recently been recognized as having the nation’s largest and one of the most successful cochlear implant programs.  Fellows will be exposed to the medical as well as surgical management of pediatric hearing loss.

The fellows spend their entire training period on the pediatric otolaryngology service, developing confidence in patient care and operative techniques, refining their teaching skills, and increasing their level of comfort in administrating the pediatric otolaryngology surgical service. Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago fellows are exposed to multiple interdisciplinary clinics including a craniofacial clinic, velopharyngeal clinic, and swallowing and dysphasia clinic. The fellows assume increased independent responsibility in a graduated fashion in the operating room, at the bedside, and in the clinic under supervision provided by the faculty.

Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), founded in 1901, was the first pediatric hospital in Southern California and is the largest in the area with more than 320 beds including 106 critical care beds offering more than 350 pediatric specialty programs and services. CHLA consistently ranks in the top 10 children’s hospitals in the nation according to the US News & World Report and is a referral center for Southern California, nationally and internationally. Founded in 1985, the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology’s (ASPO) first president was Dr. Seymour Cohen whose practice was at CHLA. The Division of Otolaryngology at CHLA is the largest group of fellowship-trained pediatric otolaryngologists in Los Angeles. The Division averages 12,000 patient visits and 3,000 surgical procedures annually.

Fellows are involved in the care of both common and complex otolaryngologic disorders in infants, children, and adolescents of a diverse population in one of the nation’s largest cities. All ACGME requirements are met or exceeded including the surgical case index for pediatric otolaryngology fellows. All full-time pediatric fellowship-trained faculty have received their training from different institutions across the nation offering the fellow a variety of perspectives and approaches to patient care. All other faculty are fellowship-trained in otology/neurotology, rhinology/sinus surgery, endocrine surgery, or facial plastic surgery. The majority of faculty have an additional graduate degree such as an MBA, PhD, or MPH.

The 12-month curriculum will enable the fellow to acquire the knowledge, skills, and judgment required to competently practice pediatric otolaryngology. Under the supervision of the full- and part-time faculty, the fellow will participate in patient care with a graded and progressive responsibility in outpatient clinics, inpatient and emergency room consultations, and surgical procedures. The fellow will also participate in multi-disciplinary clinics and teams such as Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Soft Tissue Oncology, Vascular Anomalies, Microtia, Thyroid/parathyroid (Endocrine), Rhinology/sinus surgery, Otology/cochlear implant, Craniofacial Team, Voice, Functional Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallow (FEES), and Aerodigestive Tract and Sleep. The fellow will engage in scholarly activity with a minimum requirement of submission of a research project for the annual ASPO meeting and complete at least one quality improvement project.  A full-time research study coordinator is available to the fellow to facilitate both basic science and clinical research.
